Volunteers in Action
Amanda Curry’s love of animals led her to Pawsitive Karma Rescue
Please tell us a little about you and Pawsitive Karma Rescue.
I am a freelance accountant for the motion picture industry. I basically do accounting work on the set of feature films. In my spare time, I volunteer at Pawsitive Karma Rescue. I’ve lived in the Austin area for fourteen years and the Cat Hollow neighborhood for the last five. Before coming to this area, I grew up in Temple, TX and went to college and graduate school in the east. My life has always involved animals such as dogs, cats, and horses. This is where my passion for helping animals originated.
Pawsitive Karma Rescue (PKR) was established in April of last year. Tabitha Galeana, founder of PKR, wanted every animal in Central Texas to have a chance at life. PKR concentrates on rescuing “special needs” animals that are deemed “unadoptable” by the city shelter and other animal rescue groups. Although it is a small organization, PKR was able to save 284 animals in 2011!
What types of tasks do you perform for this organization?
I enter data into Petpoint, a web-based animal management program used to keep track of every animal that PKR has rescued. I answer voicemail inquiries concerning animals available for adoption as well. Another project of mine is to contact manufacturers of animal food and supplies to discuss the possibility of obtaining bulk discounts and/or donations for PKR. I’m also available for transports of animals and supplies.Being a PKR volunteer is perfect for my lifestyle. I am frequently required to travel with my job but am still able to contribute about 15 hours per week since my tasks can be done online.
How can others get involved?
PKR would love your help as they operate solely through foster families and volunteers. There is no actual building, so all of PKR’s rescued animals reside in foster homes. PKR also needs animal transporters (Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas), adoption event workers, marketing and data entry volunteers as well as animal biography and Craigslist ad writers. You can also donate food, animal supplies, and toys. Donations of supplies and services are tax deductible.
